What Is a Desuperheater?

A Desuperheater is a device that sprays finely atomized cooling water into superheated steam

in order to bring the steam temperature down to the required level.


In simple terms, it works on the following principle.

High temperature superheated steam + spray water → fine droplets sprayed and mixed → spray water evaporates → steam temperature drops

The steam can only be cooled to the target temperature reliably when the cooling water is fully atomized and evenly mixed into the steam, so

a desuperheater should never be thought of as a simple water spray device.

In a real plant, steam temperature, pressure, flow rate, spray water conditions, available installation space and load variation all have to be considered together

when selecting and designing the right type of Desuperheater.

Which HORA Desuperheaters Are Available?

1. Injection Lance

The Injection Lance reaches into the steam pipe and sprays cooling water inside it.

Spray water is injected into the steam flow inside the pipe, mixes with the steam, and lowers the steam temperature as it evaporates.

2. Steam Assisted Atomizer

The Steam Assisted Atomizer uses auxiliary steam to atomize the spray water even more finely.

By breaking the spray water into very small droplets that mix rapidly with the hot steam, it is designed to deliver efficient cooling and accurate temperature control.

How evenly the spray water mixes with the steam and how quickly it evaporates are decisive factors in Desuperheater performance, so

this atomizing technology plays an important role as well.

3. Venturi Desuperheater

The Venturi Desuperheater uses a venturi section to make the steam flow and the spray water mix effectively.

Its defining feature is that the geometry of the steam passage itself is used to mix the spray water thoroughly into the steam.

It is one of the Desuperheater designs used where the mixing and evaporation process matters most.

4. Multiple Nozzle Desuperheater

As the name suggests, the Multiple Nozzle Desuperheater sprays cooling water through several nozzles.

Rather than concentrating the spray water in a single nozzle, the flow is distributed across multiple nozzles so that it mixes with the steam more uniformly.

This multiple nozzle approach suits plants with high steam flow rates or tight temperature control requirements.
