In food plants, pharmaceutical companies, and bio production facilities, most equipment is connected with stainless steel piping. That piping, however, is generally not welded permanently. In many cases it uses a connection method built so that the line can be separated easily whenever necessary and then reassembled.
The method used most often for this purpose is the Tri Clamp (Sanitary Clamp) connection. Today we introduce the Sanitary Clamp (SUS304, 2-Segment) in SUS304 material.
Put simply, it is a fastening device that holds pipe to pipe firmly in place. A gasket is inserted between two ferrules, and the clamp wraps around the outside and tightens them, which seals the interior.

All three of these have to be present before one complete connection is formed. The clamp alone does not make the joint; it becomes easy to understand once you remember that the gasket and the ferrule must be used together with it.
General industrial piping is frequently joined by welding or by threaded connections. In processes where hygiene is critical, such as food and pharmaceuticals, the piping instead has to be separated and cleaned often.
The piping has to be taken apart frequently for the situations above, and with a welded connection that work takes a long time and is also difficult to manage. The Tri Clamp method allows the joint to be separated and reassembled with ease, which is why it is currently the most widely adopted hygienic piping connection method.

The wing nut can be tightened by turning it by hand, so no separate tool is required. On site, an operator can carry out pipe separation, cleaning, inspection, and reassembly quickly, and working time is shortened considerably. On production lines with a heavy maintenance load, this convenience becomes a substantial advantage.
Q. Is a gasket needed as well?
A. Yes. Depending on the fluid handled and the operating temperature, a gasket in EPDM, silicone, PTFE, or a similar material is selected.
Q. Which size should be selected?
A. Select the size that matches the specification of the ferrule currently in use. Supply is generally in standard Tri Clamp sizes such as 1 inch, 1.5 inch, and 2 inch.
Q. Is tightening it harder always better?
A. Not necessarily. Tightening too strongly can compress the gasket excessively and damage it, while tightening too weakly can allow leakage. The most important point is to tighten firmly by hand and then maintain an appropriate fastening condition.
A sanitary clamp may look like a simple connecting component, but it is a core part that governs the airtightness, the stability, and the maintenance convenience of hygienic piping.
