Hello, this is VALVEPARK.
Plants that make food or beverages, along with pharmaceutical and bio production facilities, use sanitary piping rather than general piping. Sanitary piping must leave no residue inside and must be easy to clean, so it has to satisfy far higher hygiene standards than ordinary piping.
Today we explain the SUS304 weld type Sanitary Ferrule, the component used most fundamentally in this kind of hygienic piping.
A sanitary ferrule is a component welded to the end of a pipe so that a Tri Clamp connection can be made there. It is easiest to think of it as a connection port that joins fixed piping to detachable equipment. Once the ferrule is welded to the pipe, using a clamp and a gasket allows equipment to be attached and detached quickly, which makes maintenance and cleaning very convenient.
SUS304 stainless steel material
SUS304 is the stainless steel grade used most widely in food, beverage, cosmetics, and general hygienic equipment, and it provides excellent corrosion resistance and durability. The interior is also polished smooth in line with hygienic piping standards, so liquids and foreign matter do not readily remain and cleaning efficiency is outstanding.
Sanitary ferrules are used across a wide range of industrial sites.
It is widely applied in piping systems where hygienic management is important.
This is the question asked most often by those encountering the product for the first time. SUS304 and SUS316L are both stainless steel grades widely used in hygienic piping, but the suitable material differs according to the service environment.
| Category | SUS304 | SUS316L |
|---|---|---|
| Key characteristics | The most commonly used stainless steel | Contains molybdenum (Mo) for even better corrosion resistance |
| Corrosion resistance | Excellent in general environments | Suitable for highly corrosive environments such as chlorides and acidic conditions |
| Service environment | Food, beverage, general hygienic piping | Pharmaceutical, bio, fine chemical, highly corrosive processes |
| Price | Relatively economical | Higher than SUS304 |
| Recommended use | General hygienic piping and production equipment | GMP processes, high-purity piping, corrosive fluid transfer |
For general food and beverage production equipment or hygienic piping, SUS304 on its own often provides sufficient performance. SUS316L, by contrast, is mainly used where fluids of high corrosivity such as chlorides or strong acids are handled, or in environments demanding still higher corrosion resistance and cleanliness, such as GMP level pharmaceutical and bio processes. Selecting the material that suits the service environment of the equipment and the characteristics of the fluid handled is therefore important.
Weld quality matters far more in sanitary piping than in general piping. Oxide scale forming on the inside during welding can become a contamination source, so orbital welding is generally carried out under an argon back purge environment. Carrying out interior cleaning and passivation treatment after welding raises hygienic performance and corrosion resistance further.
The SUS304 weld type sanitary ferrule is the most fundamental connecting component in hygienic piping. Welded to the pipe end, it forms a Tri Clamp connection point, and because equipment can be attached and detached easily and quickly, maintenance and cleaning are convenient. It is widely used across industries including food, beverage, pharmaceuticals, bio, chemicals, and secondary batteries, so when building a stable hygienic piping system it is important to select the size and material that suit the service environment.
