Hello, this is VALVEPARK.
In the food, pharmaceutical, bio and chemical plants that run sanitary piping, a single small component often determines the stability of the whole installation. The gasket is one of them: an important consumable that stops leakage at the pipe connection.
Today we take an accessible look at the sanitary flanged gasket in Viton (FKM), a product many of our customers ask about.
The Tri-Clamp is a connection method that lets you join and separate pipe easily. But bringing metal directly against metal leaves a gap, and liquid or gas can escape through it. The component that goes in between is the gasket.
By sealing the connection, the gasket performs the following roles.
It is a small component, but it carries a very important role in the production process.
VITON is a high-performance rubber in the FKM (fluoroelastomer) family. Its chemical resistance and heat resistance are superior to those of the EPDM and silicone normally used, which is why it is widely applied in demanding industrial environments.
These are the environments in which the material shows its performance.
Standard VITON (FKM) can generally be used in a range of approximately -20°C to 200°C. In cryogenic service, or in environments that go well above 200°C, it is advisable to consider a different material.
VITON has excellent durability, but it is not a product that lasts indefinitely. In processes where the clamp is repeatedly fastened and disassembled in particular, elasticity can decrease over time.
Regular inspection combined with preventive replacement helps to avoid leakage incidents and to keep the installation running stably.
In sanitary piping, changing nothing more than the gasket can make a substantial difference to the stability of the installation and to maintenance efficiency.
Where the environment is difficult for ordinary EPDM or silicone - organic solvents, oils, high-temperature processes - a VITON (FKM) flanged gasket can be a sound choice.
The flanged design also aligns the assembly position easily and prevents the gasket from slipping out, which improves workability. For that reason it is in wide use across the food, pharmaceutical, bio, chemical and secondary battery industries.
When selecting a gasket, checking the type of fluid, the temperature and the pressure together with the Tri-Clamp size already in use will lead you to a better-matched product.
