How do I choose between cast-iron and stainless steel bodies?
Cast-iron bodies offer excellent cost competitiveness and are the standard choice for large-bore lines carrying low-corrosivity fluids such as general industrial water, treated water, and HVAC water. For high chloride concentrations or strongly acidic/alkaline fluids, a stainless steel (SUS304 or higher) or ductile iron specification should be considered.
Can the valve be converted to actuated operation?
By removing the gearbox and attaching a pneumatic or electric actuator to the ISO5211 direct mounting pad, the valve can be converted to automated operation without body replacement. This is a suitable platform for phased automation of large-bore lines - starting with manual gearbox operation and adding an actuator when remote control is later required.
Is partial-opening operation possible?
A gearbox operator can maintain the disc at a desired position with precision, making it suitable for partial-opening operation. However, butterfly valves have an inherently non-linear relationship between disc rotation angle and flow rate, with the 30°-70° range being the practical throttling zone. For sections requiring continuous precise flow regulation, a globe control valve should be considered.
