How does a wing-style (flanged) gasket differ from a flat gasket?
A flat gasket is a simple disc shape and lower in cost, but care is needed to align it on the ferrule center during assembly. A wing-style gasket has a retention shoulder (wing) on the outer circumference that automatically positions it in the ferrule groove, reducing assembly errors and the risk of dead space regardless of operator skill.
How do I choose between silicone, EPDM, and PTFE gaskets?
Silicone has excellent elastic recovery across a wide temperature range and is widely used on food, dairy, and pharmaceutical lines. EPDM has excellent durability against water, steam, and weakly alkaline fluids and is widely used on CIP/SIP lines. What is the operating temperature range of silicone?
General silicone gaskets are usable in the -60 to 200 degree C range and have good elastic recovery in cold-hot cycling. For high-temperature lines well above 200 degree C or environments with prolonged direct steam contact, EPDM, PTFE, or other materials should be reviewed instead.
How should the replacement interval be managed?
Silicone gaskets gradually undergo compression set and loss of elasticity through repeated tightening and CIP/SIP cycles. Replacement is recommended when surface cracks, discoloration, or permanent deformation are observed during periodic inspection. On lines with frequent disassembly and reassembly, replacing with a new gasket each time is recommended.
